iSeries
(AS/400) File And Print Serving - Netserver
Have you ever wished you could use the iSeries for file and print serving directly
from a Windows PC without using Client Access? Well, now you can: If you have
an iSeries running V4R2 or later and Windows 95, Windows NT, or Windows 2000
PCs on a TCP/IP network, you can use the iSeries Support for Windows Network
Neighbourhood NetServer, a non-chargeable OS/400 feature that lets Windows
PCs seamlessly access iSeries integrated file system (iSeries IFS) directories
and OS/400 printers. Through Netserver, the iSeries file and print serving functions
become available through the normal Windows Explorer interface. This allows
you to map drives and use printers attached to the iSeries without having to
sign onto a Client Access connection.
  iSeries NetServer
Advantages iSeries NetServer is not meant to replace Client Access but instead
provide an alternative solution for basic iSeries-to-Windows file and print
serving needs. iSeries NetServer gives Windows 95/NT and W2K users easier access
to the iSeries without requirement to buy Client Access if they do not need
its other functions, such as terminal and print emulation, Open Database Connectivity
(ODBC), ASCII-to-EBCDIC data translation, and connectivity over protocols other
  than TCP/IP.
iSeries NetServer also provides an alternative to running Windows NT Server
on the Integrated PC Server (IPCS). If you do not want to install an IPCS in
your iSeries but do want to use it as a Windows NT server, you can provide 95/NT-to-
  iSeries access with iSeries NetServer.
Using the iSeries for storing and sharing files, will provide you with increased
stability, and greatly simplify your backup and recovery strategy.
Netserver is also the preferred solution for those customers still using shared
folders. ATS can help you to migrate from shared folders to Netserver and take
full advantage of the iSeries file and print serving capabilities.
